The Army General’s (Heer)

Generaloberst Heinz Guderian’s Black Panzer Uniform

Period photo of Guderian wearing his black panzer wrap. Notice how the three pips are centered in the middle of his shoulderboards, as on the example above from the museum. With the rank of Generaloberst the pips are more often seen with the bottom two pips positoned closer toward the shoulder seam, rather than in the center of the boards, making Guderians choice of pip placement somewhat unique. The pip placement in this photo thus matches that of the tunic example residing in the museum. There has been note made by several collectors of militaria, that the collar tab insignia, shown in the close-up photo below, may be representative of a post-war replacement.

German Army General der Infanterie Kuno-Hans von Both

General der Inf. Von Both was one of the most highly decorated Generals in a career spanning two World Wars. He was awarded the Pour le Merite (Blue Max) in World War One and the Knights Cross and German Cross in Gold during World War Two. (private collection)

Generalleutnant Erwin Mack’s uniform and visor

Mack was the commander of the 23^rd Panzer Division and was killed by a Soviet mortar barrage on Aug 26 1942 near Nowo Poltawskoje in the Caucasus region of southern Russia.  Three of the officers of his staff were killed right next to him.  At the time Mack was forward with the 128^th Motorized Infantry Regiment.  They were right next to the General’s halftrack, but were unable to reach cover in time.
